Many teenagers that need braces, lament the idea of having metal brackets, wires and other hardware visible in their smile. To help ease some of this awkwardness Dr. Jacob Spendlove also offers ceramic coated braces.
For all intents and purposes, these are just like traditional wire and bracket braces, only much of the visible hardware has been glazed in a special porcelain ceramic material. This can be shaded to perfectly match their natural tooth enamel, making it harder for the casual observer to even notice they have braces on their teeth.
Just like traditional braces, they will need to be brushed and the teeth flossed twice per day. It’s important to note that the porcelain glaze will not be subject to staining. So they should refrain from brushing with a whitening toothpaste. This could actually result in a noticeable difference between their teeth and the braces.
On the other end of the spectrum, if they frequently enjoy dark foods and beverages, it could actually stain the tooth enamel resulting in another mismatch. They can still enjoy dark foods in moderation, but would likely benefit from brushing their teeth after eating chocolate, dark berries and other foods prone to staining tooth enamel. They can still enjoy dark beverages, but should be encouraged to drink them through a straw.
If you are considering braces for your son or daughter, you should call Dr. Jacob Spendlove’s office in Flagstaff, Arizona at (928) 774-0881 to ask about the ceramic coating option.
