If you notice plaque growing and living on your retainer, it’s important to remove it as soon as possible. That way you can prevent dental issues and a smelly orthodontic appliance. To help you remove the plaque from your retainer, our orthodontist, Dr. Jacob Spendlove, is happy to give you the tips and information you need.

To begin the plaque-removal process, put your retainer in a cup of white vinegar. The vinegar will loosen the plaque and make it easier to clean. Keep the retainer in the cup for about 5 minutes. When necessary, scrub the appliance with a toothbrush. It’s probably best to use a toothbrush that isn’t being used to clean a smile. After you’re done, place non-abrasive toothpaste on the toothbrush bristles and scrub the retainer once more. This will help eliminate the vinegar taste when you put the appliance back in your mouth. Also, the non-abrasive paste will help you avoid scratching or damaging the appliance, especially if your retainer is like an Invisalign® aligner.
